WOW! just saw BFG adapted by you, preformed by the Depaul Theatre School in Chicago, il. U.S.A.
Thank You!!!!!!!

Dear Dawn,

Many thanks for your message.  So glad you saw THE BFG.  I wish I could have come to Chicago to see it!  Hope it was good!

I have visited the Depaul Theatre School.  I came to speak to some students in the make-up department, run by my friend Nan Zabriskie.  In fact Nan set up and ran for some years the Chicago Children's Theatre, which was the first company in the United States to present my adaptation of THE BFG.  If you see her in the college, please send her my love and best wishes!

Hi David
I like the sound of 'Jack the Lad' but cannot find it on the Samuel French site? Also, is there an accompaniment CD? Big fan of Playaway! I remember Toni Arthur too!

Thanks for your message.

JACK THE LAD might work very well for you.  I have just looked on the Samuel French website and found it listed in the "acting editions" list, under J, and also under W for Wood.  It is also in the "price list".  I don't think they actually talk about the plays on the website - you have to get a catalogue for that!

I am afraid I don't think there is any accompaniment CD.  But I am in touch with Toni who might be able to help, should you be interested to take this further.  Meanwhile, let me know if you have any problems getting hold of a script!

Hello Mr Wood, I work for the Stoke on Trent & District Gingerbread Centre and we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary this year. As part of our celebrations we are planning to perform a play with the teenage parents that we work with and their children. I thought it would be nice to act out the Gingerbread man story and came across your play. We are a charity and thus our funds are a little restricted to say the least! I wonder whether you could give me some information about accessing your play or any adaptations that would help me, and if you have any ideas that would help us to bring the play together succesfully. I did plan to write the adaptation myself but don't really want to reinvent the wheel!! Any ideas or feedback would be very gratefully received and who better to ask than someone with your experience and expertise.
Thank you in anticipation

Dear Ruth,

Thanks for your message.  I am afraid I don't think that my play would be suitable for you.  It is not based on the original nursery tale, and only involves a cast of six characters, living on a Welsh dresser.

I think you need something with the animals and characters from the original story.  Unfortunately I cannot think of any published versions that might fit the bill.

If you really wanted to read a copy of my play, you can buy it from Samuel French Ltd.  Their website has all the details.

All good wishes,

Yours

hello i just wanted to write to tell you that you have been an inspiration, i am a primary teacher with an undergraduate degree was in drama which includedperformance/physical theatre and creative writing. I really believe in Childrens theatre and want to invest sometime in developing it in my local area. I have decided to get my creative writng head out and start writing again you are an inspiration , thankyou Gx

Dear Gillian,

Thank you for your kind message.  Delighted to hear that my work had been helpful.  Presumably you have read my THEATRE FOR CHILDREN book- did it help with your degree?  So few drama students show any interest in children's theatre that it always gives me pleasure when I hear from somebody like you!

I hope you are enjoying your teaching job.  I do storytellings in lots of primary schools and thoroughly enjoy it, but, to be honest, I don't think I would have the energy or patience to work with the children full time!  My admiration for teachers knows no bounds!

Best wishes,

HI there,
I ahve been searching for ages for The Plotters of Cabbage patch Corner to show my kids. It was the 1st production I ever went to see at a theatre aged 7 at Sadlers Wells in 1979. It was Awesome well to a 7year old anyway. Hope to see this in production somewhere one day so I can relive the experience and take the kids along too. Well done on a fab site.[:*]

Dear Samantha,

Thanks for your memories of seeing PLOTTERS at Sadler's Wells in 1979.  This was the first ever production by Whirligig Theatre, the touring company I co-ran for 25 years!  We had done the production before several times, but this was the first time it had gone on tour.  We opened the tour at Sadler's Wells, and got some splendid reviews!

The play is still quite popular amongst amateur theatre companies and some schools, and has suddenly taken on a new lease of life in Germany!  I really wish a new production could be mounted.  I think it would still be enjoyable and relevant, even though it was written 35 years ago!

All good wishes,

David

Dear David,
Ever since I was a very small child, I always loved 'The Gingerbread Man', and, according to my mother, I used to watch the videotape over and over again (apparently, it was very hard on her, as she had to rewind it every time!)
And recently, after many nights searching on the internet I found the DVD - I had struck gold! I ordered it immediately, and watched it... over and over again!
So - this is to say thank you so much for the wonderful times you have given me...
But also, I am aware that the DVD only contains the first 6 episodes, and, apparently there are 13 in total... Do you have any idea where I could get hold of the other seven? I've even been losing sleep over this question! As you may expect, my mother is incredibly worried...
All the best...
Ben

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your message. Delighted to hear you are still a fan of THE GINGERBREAD MAN!

The history of the video/DVD is very complicated. Even I don't know exactly the current situation. The company that originally made the programmes was taken over, and since then there have been at least two or three more take-overs! My agent is trying to track down the present rights-holders.

As far as I know Abbey Home Video now release the first half dozen episodes.

But I don't think there is a DVD of the FURTHER ADVENTURES.

These were originally released on video by Polygram. The number was 086 092 3. You may be able to find this on the internet, on Amazon or Ebay. Good luck with your search! I wish I could help you more!

All good wishes,

Dear George,

Thanks for your message.  I am afraid that my play, CINDERELLA, has only been seen in the theatre.  No video or DVD has been recorded.  There is an archive video of the original production, recorded on one camera from the back of the auditorium in the very early days of video!  It is not something I would be able to sell, even if the quality was good enough, because there would be all sorts of copyright problems.

Sorry about that, but thanks for your interest.

All good wishes,

Hello, David
I see from your other guestbook entries that I'm not the only one who had his childhood enlivend by the recording of "The Owl and the Pussycat" (the much worn green cassette is still around here somewhere!). On behalf of us all, thank you for that little piece of magic.
Apart from the three main actors (Secombe, Castle & Jacques) I don't think the jacket credited the rest of the cast - a pity in my view as they all did an excellant job. It seems to me that I recognise one or two of them but I can't be sure. Do you know who the rest of the cast were on that recording?

Dear David,

Thanks for your message.  Always nice to hear from an OWL AND PUSSYCAT fan!  Because this was my first successful musical play, it has always meant a lot to me.  Next year it will be 40 years old, believe it or not!

I am surprised that the cast were not mentioned on your cassette.  It has been issued with various covers and notes over the years, but I am sure contractually they should have mentioned everybody!

The Dong was played by Monty James, who played the part in the first London production.  Mr. and Mrs. Canary were played by Peter Corey and Jacqueline Clarke (perhaps best known for her appearances with Dave Allen).  The other Birds were played by Beatrice Aston and Christopher Biggins, both of whom had been in the original London production.  All four playing Birds and Canaries also played the Jumblies.  The Plum Pudding Flea was played by John Hollis.  The Runcible Spoon was played by Jacqueline Clarke.  Professor Bosh was Ben Aris who played it on the stage several times over the years.  I had worked with him in the film IF ...

The Pig was played by the West Country comedian Billy Burden.

And the Turkey was, believe it or not, played by me!  This was a treat, I must say!  But I had played it for a few performances in the original London production, when the actor was ill!

If you ever want another copy of the recording, there are cassettes available via the website!

All good wishes,

Yours

Hello David. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be one of the sheep and ducks in "Babe the Sheep Pig" last year in Regents Park. I had a great time. I have read you are doing the Fantastic Mr. Fox in the park this year. I have friends who enjoyed Sheep Pig who said they wished they had auditioned and wonder if there will be auditions for children in the Fantastic Mr. Fox this Summer.

Hi David,
I read your chapter in the Assitej book in my research for my dissertation. I wish to investigate how the different ways we tell the same story affect the story IE puppetry, movement, narration etc and I was hoping to use a version of the Gingerbread man be it the original fairy story or your own version. I wonder if you would mind having a chat with me about it?
Thanks for your time,
Dani

Dear Dani,

Thanks for your message.  I am sorry it has taken me rather a long time to reply!

I hope my book has been useful in your research for your dissertation!

If you would still like to talk to me about it, we might be able to fix something up.  I will send you an e-mail.

Good luck with it all!

Hi David
I just discovered your site while searching for Fimbles images for my 2 year old son. I am a Brit living in Denver, CO, my wife is Texan. We are extremely cautious about how much and what we allow our son to watch on TV which virtually eliminates all American TV. We do allow Thomas the Tank Engine, Postman Pat, Bob the builder (and we all think the UK version is way better) and The Fimbles. I know this is probably going to receive an obvious answer since it is not televised here but are there ever going to be plans for a US tour of The Fimbles?
One other thing I would like to share with you. When I was 13 I had the privilege of knowing Roald Dahl and I must say it was a wonderful experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I played with his son Theo, watch as he let his birds fly out of the aviary every morning and I still have my most precious treasure, a signed first edition of Charlie and the Chocolate factory which Roald took of his bookshelf and gave me. A gem of a memory.
Keep up the great work you are doing
All the best
Steve

Dear Steve,

Many thanks for your message.  No, there is no chance of a US tour of FIMBLES, I am afraid!  For exactly the reason you suggest!  The programmes are popular in many parts of the world, but, for some reason, have not reached the States.  Please tell your wife that I will be in Dallas for a few days in March!  The Dallas Children's Theatre are performing my adaptation of Roald Dahl's JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH.

Which brings me neatly to your experience of knowing the great man!  Your signed first edition will be worth quite a lot now!  And the fact that he took it off his bookshelf and handed it to you makes a lovely story.

Having adapted six of his books for the stage, I have become friendly with many members of his family.  I have met Theo several times.  Unfortunately Dahl himself died as I was adapting THE BFG (hopefully not BECAUSE I was adapting THE BFG!), and I never got to meet him.  I hope he would approve of what I have done to his brilliant stories.  To be honest, he was never very happy with the adaptations and films based on his books, and maybe he wouldn't have liked mine either!  But, luckily for me, the family have been very supportive.

Last month I was in Philadelphia seeing a very good production of THE BFG at the Arden Theatre.  Gradually my adaptations seem to be taking off in the United States, which is a real pleasure, and I thoroughly enjoy visiting.  I especially enjoy the buttermilk pancakes with mulberry syrup!

All good wishes,

Yours

Hey there...
my name is Jerry Steinhour, and I am going to be directing the stage version of THE WITCHES...my auditions are next month.
I am very anxious...but was wondering if there were any video resources...like other taped versions or something, that I might be able to watch, to get a better idea how to pull off some of the cool f/x.
If you could let me know, I'd appreciate it!
thanks,

Hi David

I met you back in 1993 when I auditioned for Noddy - when I was straight out of drama school. You offered me the part of Tessie Bear in the touring production but unfortunately I was unable to do it as I had already committed to projects which clashed with the touring dates - a great pity!
I would love the opportunity to meet with you again sometime in the near future. In the meantime, would you mind if I were to send you my headshot & C.V with regard to any future castings I might be suitable for as I would be thrilled to have the opportunity of working with you.I hope you are well David and I wish you all the luck and continued success with your forthcoming tour of "Danny.." and future Productions! Thanks David..and I think the Website is fabulous!
Take care & hope to hear from you soon
Warmest Regards

Dear Lindsey,

Very good to hear from you!  I would be very happy to receive your photo and c.v.  However, I am not directing as much as I used to!  So your info would go in the file, just in case!

I will send you an e-mail to suggest the best way to send things to me.

Meanwhile, thank you for your good wishes.  The tour of DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD is going very well.  All the dates are listed on the website.  Hopefully you will be able to see it one day!

Thanks, too, for your kind comments about the website!

Mole's Betime Story is a real favourite with the children at teh local preschool where I work.We have started off this term with a topic based on Mole's Bedtime. The children have really loved it and most of them can retell the story with little prompting and they all enjoyed making their own mole and a cosy comfy bed for him to sleep in. So glad that the book is now back in print as our copy - which originally was given to my son 8 Christmases ago - is rather battered and worn and badly needs replacing. We will also be getting copies of the winter and summer stories as we do not know those. Cannot recommend the Bedtime story strongly enough to all people who live or work with preschool children.

Dear Mara,

Thanks for your message.  Delighted to hear that MOLE'S BEDTIME STORY is a favourite at the school where you work.  Yes, at last the book is back in print, with brand new illustrations too - again by Richard Fowler, of course - and hopefully another generation of children will be able to have fun with it.

If you want to buy MOLE'S WINTER STORY and MOLE'S SUMMER STORY via the website, please do.

Meanwhile, thank you so much for recommending the original MOLE'S BEDTIME STORY to readers of my Guest Book!

David, I'm an aspiring playwright and have a great idea for children's Shakespeare. I'm taking my time with it since I've seen very few plays in my life, only started reading Shakespeare, and am finally going to school for writing. My problem is that the idea behind the plays seem bent more towards little children while the feel of it seems more fit for children 8-12. I really want to write to this age group of 8-12, but I'm not sure if they'll be into this more fairy tale version of Shakespeare and at the same time there is very little information on writing for children much less children from 8-12. My question is: Besides your book, which I intend to read, are there any other books out there for writing children's plays? Are there groups or message boards on the internet to help someone like me out? Are there newsletters or socities you can join?

Dear Marc,

Thanks for your message. I sympathise with your problem. Getting the content and the feel right for a target audience is always hard! You are writing from the United States. There is an organisation called the American Alliance of Theatre and Education (AATE). The members are playwrights and teachers. I suggest you look them up on the internet and send them a message asking if they can advise you. They might, if you tell them where you live, put you in touch with someone nearby who can help you. Or they may recommend a suitable book or website with practical ideas. Another thought is to Google 'Shakespeare and children' and see what comes up! Good luck with your writing!

Best wishes, David.

Dear Mr Wood,
I have tried submitting this message already but it doesn't seem to have gone through. I thought the Children's Party at the Palace was excellent. You didn't have to be a child to enjoy it and I think it deserves to be repeated and released on DVD. I really liked to off-beat casting of Sanjev Bhaskar as Robin Hood and Martin Clunes as PC Plod (he'd certainly make sure there was no behaving badly). Ronnie Corbett was great. He's someone no-one else can hold four candles to. There's a lot more to Meera Syal than Granny Kumar. Despite my age, my lady friend's boys have made me into a Harry Potter scholar and Messrs Radcliffe and Grint and Miss Watson gave a great performance. When Harry Hill came on with the owl it was beating its wings so hard I think it could easily have taken off with him still hanging on to it by his hand. Thinking of flying I am a plane enthusiast and saw Aces High in the cinema when I was 11. I was sad and horrified when your character Thompson dies so horribly when his SE5a catches fire. I also liked you in the BBC Tv adaptation of Huntingtower. I am a fan of John Buchan's books, in fact my living room looks out on to the railway along which Hannay's train passes in the original story of The Thirty Nine Steps. Returning to the Children's Party it was excellent. Congratulations and thank you for such a wonderful show.

Dear Robert Kelly,

Delighted to receive your kind message. Fancy you remembering HUNTINGTOWER!!! That was great fun to film. We were in Scotland, on location and in the studio. One scene, after shooting was complete, wasn't quite right, and had to be reshot. Paul Curran and I were flown up to Glasgow, then driven to the location, did the scene, then flown back again. We left our homes in London at about 9.00 am and were back in time for tea at 4.00pm!!!

ACES HIGH was fun too, although my forehead and eyebrows were burned a bit when filming the lead-up to my dramatic death scene! Interestingly, when the film is shown on television, they often omit my burning descent, presumably because young children may be watching!

Very pleased you enjoyed the Children's Party at the Palace. Sadly I don't think it will be released on DVD. This is partly because J K Rowling and Warner Brothers refused permission for Harry Potter to appear in either a book version or a DVD version of my play.

The copyright of the play was assigned to Buckingham Palace, with a view to it making money for a children's literacy charity. But alas things seen to have come to a halt in that direction. I wrote a book version, but it has not been published! Maybe you could write to the Queen's Private Secretary to ask for more information! Meanwhile, all good wishes, and thanks for your comments.

David.

Could you please tell me when and where the next 'Meg and Mog' shows will be performed? My son absolutely loves the books and tv show, so i am sure he would love the live show! Many thanks.

Dear Jennifer,

Thanks for your message. How I wish I could tell you that MEG AND MOG SHOW was about to be revived! I directed it five times for Unicorn Theatre in London, when it did fantastic business! This was before the television series, of course. Since then there have been several productions in regional theatres. And a few years ago the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School put on a splendid production with Lucy (daughter of Richard) Briers and Dariel (daughter of Jon) Pertwee alternating as Meg! My London Megs were Maureen Lipman, Amanda Barrie, Sarah Greene and Leni Harper - I was so lucky! They were all marvellous. The new Unicorn Theatre has now opened and have told me that a revival of MEG AND MOG SHOW is on their list of possible productions. Maybe you could write to the Artistic Director, Tony Graham, saying how much you and your son would like to see it!!! Unicorn is in Tooley Street, London SE1 2HZ
